You Bettie Your Life

The queen of '50s pinups, Bettie Page, has died at 85.

Page showed the world that it was possible to be sexy and brunette and smile at the same time, making her an inspiration to two generations of rockabilly girls, Dita von Teese, and me. And while she could certainly dress the part, she always seemed too warm and open to be a dominatrix, part of her fantasy charm when photographed in that role.

The 2005 film The Notorious Bettie Page is worth seeing for its production design and the excellent performance by Gretchen Mol in the title role, but the best way to experience Bettie is on the page. The camera loved her, and she returned the favor.

In 2004, I did something I'd never done before, and paid a photographer known for his vintage glamour shots to take my picture - as Bettie Page. Despite my aversion to bangs, the photos turned out beautifully. Unfortunately, the CD with all the images was lost, and as far as I know only one print remains.

Maybe it's time to do another session.
