Contrary to my prediction that I would never have another dog, I will as of today. Actually, I will have a dog I had before, as my beloved Cassie is flying cross-country to live with me.
Incredibly, this will represent the first time I will have another being fully dependent on me physically, if you don't count the army of dogwalkers, doggie daycare attendants and doormen I've already enlisted into her care. So please forgive me in advance if I recount one too many stories about her adorable behavior or her adjustment from lifetime California girl with her own yard, pool and live-in brothers to Central-Park-strutting single New Yorker with a neurotic mom. I'm thinking sitcom.
Cassie is a seven-year-old Chesapeake Bay Retriever. She was named after the Ethiopian queen Cassiopeia of mythology, who was beautiful but also arrogant and vain; in Greek the name means "she whose words excel." So we may have a thing or two in common.
