Backwards in High Heels: Hedy Lamarr

She was known as "The Most Beautiful Woman in Films," but the former Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler (1913-2000) once said, "Any girl can be glamorous. All you have to do is stand there and look stupid."

Notorious for the 1933 film Ecstasy, in which she both appeared nude and simulated orgasm, she also starred in unintentionally hilarious blockbusters such as White Cargo ("Tondelayo no go!") and Samson and Delilah.

She also sued Mel Brooks for the "That's HEDLEY!"of Blazing Saddles.

And in 1942, Lamarr patented the earliest known form of the telecommunications method known as "frequency hopping", now widely used in cellular phones, for which she received an award from the Electronic Frontier Foundation in 1997.

So much for looking stupid.

There's a cool-sounding play about Lamarr and the invention opening in New York soon - www.frequencyhopping.net.
